Sometimes you just have to make a chicken costume
Somewhere between planning a dress for frocktails and making a quilt for a new family arrival LittleFB needed a costume for a party. The theme was "come in your favourite costume" and the conversation a few weeks ago went something like this:
Me:" What do you think you might like to go as? Michael Jackson?*, some kind of superhero? a pirate? I can make you a costume if you like"
LittleFB: "I want to be a chicken"
Me: "A chicken? are you sure? your friends will probably be superheros or pirates. Are you sure about the chicken thing?"
LittleFB:" Yes, I want to be a chicken"
*LittleFB is pretty into MJ right now and practices spinning dance moves in the kitchen on a regular basis.
A few internet searches, a raid through the fabric stash and a tracing of some Ottobre patterns (hoodie for the top and skinny cargo pants for the leggings) and the chicken costume was somehow produced. It was a lot of fun to make especially as LittleFB provided a lot of the design inspiration- the wings were completely his idea - and he just loved the finished product. It won't win any awards for neatest construction (although I did handpick the zip!!) but it certainly met the brief!
And you know what? In a room full of pirates and superheros, he was happy to be a chicken and I was proud of him for wanting to be a little different.
